Reported speech atau yang biasa juga disebut dengan direct and indirect speech adalah sebuah kalimat langsung dan tak langsung, yang dalam kehidupan sehari-hari sering kita gunakan, baik dalam keadaan sadar maupun tidak sadar. Kalimat tak langsung tentu kita sering gunakan untuk menyampaikan perkataan orang lain kepada orang ketiga. Father:Andi…. You get a new bag.

Andi: Oh… Thank you. I love you so much dad.

Andi dapat menyampaikan apa yang ayahnya katakan kepada ibunya. Namun pada kalimat tersebut akan mengalami sebuah perubahan sebagai berikut:

Andi: Mom… My father said something about me.

Mom: Tell me dear.

Andi: Father said that I got a new bag. Asal kalimatnya: Father: You get a new bag.

Mom: We love you Andi.

Perhatikan pada kalimat Father (merah) dan Andi (biru). Apakah anda melihat perubahannya? Dalam merubah kalimat direct menjadi indirect kita harus memperhatikan beberapa hal berikut ini, diantaranya: tenses, pronouns, dan adverb.
